Which one is better? It’s an eternal question since the cinema is a part of our lives. It is difficult to give an objective answer, but at the same time it is easy to find out which literary work has the most film adaptations. Surprisingly, the topper is a relatively short work: William Shakespeare’s Hamlet with its more than 50 adaptations. The list of other top performers – works that have more than 20 adaptations – is also made up of classic works. For example, Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment, Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, Gaston Leroux’s Phantom of the Opera and Charlotte Brontë’s novel Jane Eyre can all be found on it. It is particularly interesting that Alexandre Dumas contributed two works to the list of most adapted works with his novels The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Christo.
