The speed of reading depends on many things. The difficulty of the text, the reader’s level of proficiency, age, and, of course, our interest in the text we read are all important. Pursuant to former opinions, 300 words per minute was considered the average speed, but this has been disproved through research conducted by Marc Brysbaert of the Institute of Experimental Psychology at the University of Ghent. After reviewing several studies based on English texts, he found that the average reading speed for English texts is 238 words per minute. This result sheds a different light on the reading speed tests in use and their results in, but also on the performance of Napoleon, for example, who could reportedly read 2,000 words per minute.
