Children learn mainly by imitation, so of course it matters whether or not they see their parents reading and whether or not they get the impression that reading is a pleasurable activity. But as well as leading by example, it is just as important to introduce children to stories and reading in a gradual, age-appropriate way. Nursery rhymes and lullabies are the first steps, followed by reading tales, which should be continued even after the child is able to read independently. Especially as story time is not only about learning to read, but also about the parent-child relationship.
