Reading helps children discover and learn about the world; but it does just as much to help children learn about themselves. The different characters in the different stories all provide personality and behavioural patterns that not only help children navigate their relationships in the real world, but also give them a key to understanding themselves. It’s no coincidence that children always have a favourite character, usually someone like them or someone they want to become.
